Just tried to order a new phone contract and failed the credit check, this was a shock to me. How can I find more info about why? I have never had any credit problems

You would need to pay £2 to the credit agency for a one-off report to see if there are any issues.

You will have to ask Three which credit agency or agencies they use so may need to pay for each agency.

Found the following link on MSE:

Three refer to Experian, Equifax and Callcredit from the table posted. Callcredit run the free Noddle site OP so sign up for an account with them and see what's listed on your files.
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.
