Can a council tenant on housing benefit rent another property privately?

  • I don't see how you can afford to pay rent on a second property if your income is low enough that you need housing benefit for a council tenancy.

However, for most secure tenancies, your property has to be your ONLY OR PRINCIPAL HOME. Therefore, in theory you could have a 'home' elsewhere going by your tenancy agreement. Whether this will affect your housing benefit or not is a different question altogether.

Two posters with identical questions ;)
ooops....we're newbies here - we didn't know one can't post identical questions on two different threads. We did that to get more varied replies, because one thread was about housing and other about tax and benefits - both of which fits into our question... If it's against the forum rules, then apologies!

Nothing to apologise for and I don't believe it's against any rules :)

As you've since changed all posts to your current user name I was just curious.

    :)

    Getting back to your question...

If your friend will be letting the property to you, does he have permission from his mortgage company (if mortgaged) and will you be paying the Council Tax or will he ?

Is it near your current property ?

As you are running your own business, will you be claiming your expenses on the 2nd property ?
