PIN Sentry / Card Readers : Which Interchangable?

with several current accounts, from different providers, just looking at which devices i actually need to retain.

* HSBC Personal and Business accounts, along with the associated M&S Bank, require the little DIGIPASS devices. my understanding is that these are each account specific. is that right?

* Yorkshire/Clydesdale accounts use the HID Token One. Are these customer/account specific?

* Barclays and Lloyds use the LR44 Ezio Classic cardreader. These seem to be interchangable between all providers that use this system. is that right?

* RBS/Natwest, Co-op/Smile and Nationwide all provide similar cardreaders of the same design. some seem to be Gemalto and some Xiring. are these all interchangable?

are any of these devices of any value? if handed back to bank branches are they likely to recycle them, or just destroy and bin them in general waste?

Card readers are intetchangable. For eample, you can put a Natwest debit card in a card reader provided by Lloyds. They all have the same buttons like sign, identify, etc...

I guess you can keep them as spares incase one doesn't work. I think the branches would accept it and give it to another customer.

I tried registering my First Direct "secure key" with HSBC earlier this year and could not and needed to order a second one for HSBC.

As far as I've tried, my Natwest card reader works others using the same system including Nationwide and Tesco Bank.

I didn't think Lloyds uses any sort of card reader, but makes automated phonecalls instead.

Given that the devices could have been tampered-with in any number of ways before being returned, I would be horrified if branches would accept returned card-readers and do anything other than destroy them.

HSBC personal accounts can use the HSBC app to generate the passkey, instead of the device. Same with First Direct but unfortunately there is as yet no app for M&S and you need that hideous gadget for them. You can't even fit it to your keyring.

If you search eBay for "bank card reader" you'll find lots of people trying to sell them.

I'm not sure why anybody would buy one for a legitimate purpose.

I think Lloyds use them for business accounts, but they certainly don't use them for personal accounts.

TSB and Halifax don't have them either.

I have a Lloyds cardreader which is the same model as Barclays use. But yes, perhaps I received this having opened a Lloyds business account. As it happens the account was hardly used and has recently been closed.

I don't have any objection to the HSBC or M&S devices. And no desire to avoid using them.

Book12, there are two types of reader, as per my first post. I don't think they are interchangeable, are they?

And fair point re recycling security nid0

They are intetchangable. For example, you an put any debit card in a Nationwide card reader and it will work. http://www.nationwide.co.uk/support/support-articles/faqs/card-reader-faqs#xtab:twistyitem7-can-i-use-any
