I tried everything, prickly leaves, chilli powder, various chemicals meant to deter cats but nothing worked until I tried these http://www.amazon.co.uk/PestBye-Battery-Operated-Cat-Repeller/dp/B004SGC75S/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1434268976&sr=8-2&keywords=Pest+bye

It took a little while for the effect to kick in but It's been a couple of years since I purchased them and the local cats have stayed clear of my garden.
Worrying won't stop bad stuff from happening, it just stops you from enjoying the good.

    Scatter some drawing pins about.

Alternatively, a garden sprinkler could come in handy (especially if it was motion activated!).

A few spiked canes sticking out of the soil will deter them from using it, if they have no squatting room to go, they will go elsewhere.

It's funny when cat owners say try this try that and I feel like replying why don't you try controlling your animal?

Cats are a great animal to own as you get all the good bits but can palm off the bad parts onto other people :D

When I had this problem I laid rose prunings over the ground. Any spiky prunings would do, not just the leaves but the thorny stems crisscrossed over the bare soil.

Check that you donlt have plants that attract cats in the border.

Just as well it's not Tblisi - you never know what you might find in your garden there!

CiderWithRosie - I feel your pain!! My mother had exactly the same problem with her next-door-but-one's SIX cats all coming into her garden and using one particular border as their latrine.

Somebody here has suggested rose clippings, and that's precisely what we used to get rid of the problem. Mum had a couple of those wild-looking pink open roses which have absolutely masses of tiny thorns smothering their branches, so when I pruned them next I just cut the prunings down into sticks about 4-5" length and spread these all over the soil. It stopped the cats in their tracks - but it was a bit of a pain when it came to wanting to garden that border and a very thick pair of gardening gloves was required to lift the prunings all off again.

Alternatively, if yours is just a small area of border, maybe you could try some of the thick black plastic sheeting that some people put down to prevent weeds springing up? Holes can be cut wherever a plant needs to come through; meanwhile the cats won't like standing on this surface because they'll soil their feet if they do decide to powder their nose there!

    Good luck, anyway.

B and Q do a great granule type deterrent it smell like strong chives you don't need much but it does keep the cats off. Its is called - Verve Cat Repellent

We used it outside our front doorstep and the culprit never used that spot again.
