I see the shops do it fairly easily, but cannot afford them to do it right now..

I have a free sim with credit from elsewhere..

Will I need PAC(?) code regardless, from old phone co?

It's an htc wildfire s, if it helps.

A PAC is to port your number, nothing to do with unlocking the phone.
Cheapest unlocks are usually via eBay or your local market phone stall-not the national phone shops.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

No free way to unlock it as far as I can see, check eBay for codes, might be cheaper than shops.

I've just found one of them in the drawer and unlocked it for just a pound. I'm sure you can afford that. I used ebay to find a reputable seller. I used fixaphone and it took 24 hours.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
