Curious About Benefits

Hi All,
My friend has a neighbour who works as a window cleaner. He travels to London, from Kent, and stays there working for 4 days, then returns home.
He has never paid tax or NI, and never claimed benefits at all. This neighbour will be 65 next year, and has made no provision at all for retirement, so will have no pension, and very little savings. Will he be able to claim any benefits?

  • Why don't you get on with your life, instead of messing with your friend's neighbour business? Who are you, a benefit vigilante?

He may be eligible for Pension Credit.

  • Hopefully, if he hasn't paid into the system, he won't be getting anything out of it either.

Is he a foreigner? I find it hard to believe that someone born in this country would be able to evade getting into 'the system' for 50 years.

Please be under no misapprehension - nobody can avoid living in this country without relying on benefits of one form or another, be it treatment under the NHS, borrowing a library book, of just depending on the armed forces to keep us all safe.

Of course, your neighbour could just be talking a load of bull****!

How on earth would you know if he paid tax or NI or not ?
If he will have no income when he retires are you planning on supporting him financially -if not- why do you want to know ?

Curiousity and nosiness are not the same thing.
If I had an over inquisative neighbour-I'd probably feed them a load of bull too :D

It's my friend's neighbour, and he is British. I dare say he has used the NHS etc., but perhaps some creative accounting to avoid paying tax and NI. I have mixed feelings about him not having paid his due, but would not like to see him destitute. He rents a house and pays for it, and council tax, water and energy bills etc., and is the nicest bloke you could meet.

I know because he has told my friend, and he is worried about retiring. If he is able to claim some benefit, then I guess I will be supporting him, through my taxes.

Sadly many use the NHS who have not paid into the system, EVER.

    It's not a requirement.

I think he will come to the attention of HMRC when he tries to claim benefits. They will want to know how he has supported himself all these years.

Perhaps he should use some creative accounting to conjure up some money for retirement then as he shouldn't expect anything from the state if he conned them throughout his life.
