They won't give it over the phone, it needs to be done in writing, and he waited approximately 6 weeks for it.

Is the right answer. My daughter had lost her NI number and had to apply for it to be re-sent. (I think you can do the application online if you have a British passport as ID). But the NI number does indeed come back in writing, and a time scale of about 6 weeks sounds about right.

Doesn't everybody just _know_ their NI number? It's not as if it's ever changed, since it was issued when we were 15yo or whatever. God knows what happened to the official card with it on - I haven't seen that for decades - but the number is as engraved in my brain as other important and unchanging details like my driving licence number.

Same here ... I can remember my NI and driving license numbers quite easily. Passport number is another matter, although this does change every 10 years. :)

Ask the non-UK government to give him a driving licence? Presumably he paid no tax in the UK while he was working so why should he be offered any help now?

I suspect working on bahlf of a nother government he has done work which ahs benefitted the UK in kind.

Since he's a british citizen, he's also entitled to use the system just like anyone else.

Very rude and ignorant reply. - reported.

But if they did that he would (in most cases) need to apply for a UK licence in 12 months time, so back to square one.

The OP's case must be rare but I shouldn't think unique.

Really? Whilst the post in question may be curt, reporting it is a gross overreaction.

He's only 65 so if it's an EU country it will be valid until he's 70.

Not quite - YOU need YOUR NI number to access YOUR driving licence information, and generate the code to give to the hire firm.

What? That's nuts. Why not require your Driving License number to acess your driving license information?

I've got to remember to dig out a P60 to hire a car?

You do need your licence number as well as your NI number and Postcode to access that information.

A wage slip will do or you can be really sad like a number of posters and remember the number.

It's not really that sad, is it? I mean, it's one number for your whole life. You know your own birthday, your mum's name, your phone number? It's no different - in fact the design of the numbering scheme makes it easy to remember as there's a nice rhythm to it.

I think I've needed to use it maybe 4 or 5 times since I got it 16 years ago, it's never really been something worth remembering.
