More RAM is better than less RAM. (Up to a point ... 8GB seems to be the optimal amount for most systems running 64-bit Windows).

Matched RAM (2 x RAM sticks of the same type) in relevant slots can improve performance further by being able to be accessed in parallel. (You might see this called dual channel RAM).

What Nifty told me to do with 'Grandad's' laptop was to take the memory modules out and clean the brass (?) contacts with a rubber

I did this and the error messages disappeared.

    may be worth a try??

    :)

A bit of compressed air* in the slots on the motherboard can help too. :)

    * From a can, not an industrial air line. :D

Sadly my problem turned out to be a hardware one, not Chrome itself (it started out with Chrome but got worse and resulted in endless crashes and a computer I could not use, even offline).

I have used Chrome for a good few years though and never had a message telling me I'd not shut down properly, I used to get messages saying I could restore the pages I'd last looked at but it went away with the first page or bookmark I looked at. I think you can disable the option to view the past pages you viewed if you look through the settings menu.

Don't get me wrong, Chrome isn't perfect, but IME it is a great deal better than when I'd used IE as my main/sole browser! I've tried FF in the past but couldn't get used to it. Different horses for different courses I suppose.

norton is crashing, so uninstall it, use avast

Don't assume that because someone on a helpline said it was a hardware issue, that it is, memory management is a function of software.
