When did schools begin to know what was better for an individual child compared to the parent? No individual teacher can know a child, one of however many children they teach in a week, as well as most parents know their son or daughter.

I would expect that schools do know rather more about what is best for a child's education than the parents. They are education professionals. They have studied and trained for years to learn how best to deliver education to children. I doubt many parents have that level of knowledge/skill.

We are usually always going long haul (just our preference due to interests and family in far flung Areas of SE Asia), and a week doesn't cut it therefore. So that leaves us with only the Summer Holidays. Price is probably not even the main consideration, but sometimes weather and other factors would make it much simpler to go not in the Summer.

I sympathise with that one, my mum is a teacher and has a big birthday next year. I would like to plan a trip to New Zealand. Given the distance and travelling time 2-3 weeks would be best which means only the summer holidays.... but Scotland's weather would be better at that time of year than NZ!:(

Easter and xmas holidays are both at least 2 weeks long.

A NQT may have studied/trained for only 30 weeks and will probably teach a couple of hundred students each week - just doesn't compare with a parent's knowledge.

Yes I would for the gcse syllabus, in years 10 and 11. I'm not denying at all that parents teach their kids all kinds of things, in lots of fabulous ways.

My parents were actually alive for the period covered by the O level syllabus.

At the latest parent's evening, two of the teachers who my son has had for the past two years had to refer to a sheet of pictures to even know who my son was. If they don't even know him by name after two years, I don't seriously think they know more about my child than me!

I thought that as well until my nieces year 6 teacher got < and > (more than and less than) the wrong way round :rotfl: - a parent had to point it out to her when they marked all the classes work wrong!

It's s good idea to get parents in to school to talk about their experiences. Although I'm sure I covered the battle of Hastings for my o level history . How old are you misbiggles (smiley face)
