Butternut Squash Problem

hello there,
our butternut squash seems to do very well,with lots of flowers.
the bulbs coming behind seem to grow to 3 or 4 inches then turn brown, die and fall off.:confused:
we keep them well watered.
cheers,any help appreciated.

    Sounds like it could be a pollination problem - there seems to have been many fewer insects (bees) around this year. Try a bit of hand pollination - pick a male flower and give it a good wiggle in the female! NB Often a problem when grown in greenhouses!

    same problem as I have with my courgettes... and yes I too have had to resort to taking a male flower and wiggling it about as there have hardly been any insects around this year.... great for lack of mossy bites but rubbish in the garden!

    silly question time then - how do i know which flower is male and female? :D

    The male flowers have a long stem behind them, and the female will be a young courgette or squash.
    3 kids(DS1 6 Nov, DS2 8 Feb, DS3 24 Dec) a hubby and two cats - I love to save every penny I can!
