isn't going to know. Certainly for someone with a bit of technical ability the cheapest answer would be to try and replace the motherboard with a new one assuming it isn't so ancient that findinding one would be impossible.

Thanks for the replies. Error was "usb over current" and would not boot up. Took cover off to disconnect front usb cables as port openings are broken but no easy access (OH has elderly compaq presario in which USB wiring appears to be routed inside a soldered "box" on front panel (proprietary design apparently) . His PC is pretty ancient and with front usb ports broken as well, thought it was time for an upgrade.

By quoting the name as advertised on amazon I wrongly gave the impression that what we were after was a Silent pc. Actually what we wanted to know is if anyone has bought one of these CSL pcs with windows 7 pro preloaded and how they found it!

He needs windows 7 because a) he wants to continue using Outlook 2007 and our techie guy says this is not supported by 8.1 + b) he has some very specialist software he runs regularly and the developers are still working on a stable release for 8.1.

If you check the link posted by bsod in post #13 you will see that Outlook 2007 is compatible with 8.1. No use if the other software isn't of course. What upgrade you pick is up to you but what you actually need apart from Windows 7 depends on what you want to run. If the machine you have is old and the only real complaint is broken USB ports (aside from them somehow stopping it booting up) then you really don't need to spend a fortune on a new one.

Well OH rang up the local PC "repair guy" to discuss transfer of files over onto replacement pc (not something we have capability to do ourselves) and he said in his experience, Outlook 2007 will not run on 8.1?

If other stuff needed won't run on Win 7 then whether or not Outlook 2007 will is pretty much irrelevant as I said however I'd personally put more faith in Microsoft.

what is plugged into your usb ports, unplug them

transferring files is easy, plug old drive into new machine directly or via usb enclosure and copy/paste
