I had to send my licence back due to a medical condition and have been given the all clear to drive again by the medics after 12 months (12 month anniversary will be 29th June). I sent my application to DVLA nearly 4 weeks ago. Any idea how long they take to process applications?

    Why?

Have you actually read the paperwork you were given and sent off?

In some cases you can drive if you meet certain criteria while they process your application.

Last time the Mrs had to have her license reviewed for her medical condition it was just over 4 months but it was extended slightly by her forgetting to answer the organ donor question on the form.

She hasnt lost her license, just has annual reviews. Certainly the DVLA advised her that she could continue to drive whilst they reassess her situation as long as her Drs say she is fit to drive.

If the medical condition was epilepsy or another "fitting" condition then you need to wait for your license coming back. (There may also be other conditions similarly classified).

If it was another condition (e.g. depression and you had to have ECT) then you are clear to drive as long as your medical professional (e.g. doctor, consultant) gives yo yhe OK.

    Only if it was revoked.

If it was voluntary surrendered that can drive.

I'm not sure that's correct. A colleague has fallen foul of this issue, and I'm pretty sure her license wasn't revoked. (But I'll ask and confirm).

Why not wait until the OP confirms her condition and then look at the dvla form?

I was told by the DVLA that I had to relinquish my licence and given the option to voluntarily surrender or be asked for it officially. I chose to send it back voluntarily.

OK, I've spoken to the DVLA now just to confirm that my application is "in the system".

I had an isolated seizure - never had one before, and no more likely to have another (according to doctors), although just in case, not required, but for my own peace of mind I am now taking anti-convulsant medication.

    Too much information I suppose.

Anyway, the consultant told me I could drive 12 months after the event. The DVLA tell me that one can drive 6 months (!) after an isolated event, and that as far as they are concerned I can now drive again so long as I have applied for reinstatement. The consultant told me the DVLA rules says 1 year. I am not happy with him.

Being ultra cautious, I've asked the DVLA to confirm in writing that I can now drive again, in case my licence isn't returned by the 29th, but I will wait the extra 3 weeks anyway. It would be just my luck to be pulled over for something and find myself stuck in a he said, she said situation, although these last few weeks are dragging as you can imagine!

Somewhere else I read 10 months so don't be too harsh on the consultant.

You are fine to drive now.

Just check your licence when you get it, it may run for 1,2 or 3 years and not 10 before you are required to do something about it.
