If the phone was sold by Asda Mobile then yes, it will need unlocking to work with an O2 sim.

Be careful though. I was told by Asda that to get a phone unlocked I would need to go to a phone shop in the high street and pay someone to do it for me. I was with o2 at the time. I looked on google and sure enough a lot of people are charging fees to get an unlock code. I looked on the o2 website and found I could do it for nothing by completing one their forms. Simple. Don't let anyone persuade you to pay for something without checking first.
