TP Solar were recommended to me by another forum user and I've just signed with them for a 4kWp installation at the end of next week. They were very helpful and responsive to questions so I'm hoping that carries through to the installation and any subsequent support...

I had a call from TP Solar today and won't be able to get my survey done for another couple of weeks.
Still looking at other quotes for now.

    Afternoon guys,,

I had my quote with Absolute Renewable Energy just now - this was a proper surveyor who took actual measurements with an actual tape measure ;)

He also showed me a program to work out solar panel arrangements and it shows the max I can have on my roof is a 14 panel 3.71kw system.

He mentioned that there is due a VAT increase on renewable energy systems from 5% to 20% due at some point in the future, is that fact?

Either way despite the extra info and the proper survey the price for this system with a "discount" (he stressed as a member of RECC he can't use the word discount) would be £7,737.00 and as such I think it rules me out despite his conservative ROI of about 10% per year.

    I think that's a no for me...

It does look as though VAT is set to change as the UK lost a case in the European Court on whether the current 5% was in line with EU rules (VAT is an EU tax, not a UK tax). Quite what the UK Government will do in response is not yet clear but the VAT rate will rise. We could see additional subsidies of some sort or there may just have to be a price rise.

I've got a saw and a hammer, doesn't make me a chippie though!!

That'll be a limitation in his software, based on a "standard" size panel.
Panel size can and does vary, usually not by a massive amount but as all men know, size does make a difference!

I'm guessing he was using a 265w module, hence the 3.7kW limit?

As to the VAT comment - the EU ruled that our 5% VAT on energy saving products, including microgeneration and insulation, was a breach of EU law. There is no timescale for when/if it goes back up to the standard 20%.

But, there's nothing to stop the gov. from changing the reason for the exemption, so don't let pushy sales folk try this on!!

3.71kWp? He's talking from where the sun don't shine, you could have 14 x 285Wp(seraphims) panels at 3.990kWp or 12 x 330kWp(benQ) at 3.96kWp, try getting someone out who can offer from a range of different panels rather than someone who won't shop around

  • I wish I have read this thread before choosing "Project Solar UK" and have the panel put on. After the panels put on two days ago. We just found out that the panel is different from what it should be in the contract it's 3kW rather than 3.46 in the quote and contract. And the brand is different as well. We are only told that it's an upgrade, but changing from SunEdison to Evo +10 I don't think it's an model upgrade.

Anything else we can do? If possible I just want it removed and find another one to get a reasonable deal. But I think it's not possible. Then I want to prevent from losing more money on this.
    1. overquote about 7500 for 12 panels 3.46kw
    2. changed brand and with less performance.

Are there anything I can do to achieve this?

    Thanks.

    Hiya and welcome.

I'm sure the legalities aren't as simple as this, but if you ordered a Ford Focus and got a Vauxhall Corsa, I'm sure you'd have some right of comeback.

Now it might be that there's an argument for a proportional reduction in the bill (value of Focus v's Corsa) but possibly you can simply reject the whole install as not being what was contractually agreed.

Then chat on here for some recommendations, and suggestions of what price you should pay ..... though time is getting tighter.

How on Earth can a 15% reduction in output be described as an 'upgrade' ?

At the very least you should be entitled to a discount of 15% off the installation cost and probably the FIT payments on your missing 460Wp. But I'd be inclined to allege fraud !
