Son's phone stolen abroad

As a family we have a contract with EE which we've built up over 15 years. My son had his phone stolen on holiday in Spain last Thursday. We only found out yesterday via Facebook and he hadn't turned off data roaming or reported stolen. We had the phone stopped last night and wee told to call EE today. We are now worried sick that there will be a massive bill (looks like about £600 a day) that we can't pay. Are they likely to allow some sort of payment plan?

Surely it would be your son's responsibility to pay it rather than yours?

Depends whose name the contract is in, it is not uncommon to have family contracts, with a few phones running off the same contract in the name of one parent.

He should report the theft to the local police as soon as possible, get a report and make a claim on travel insurance. Check home insurance and bank accounts in case they also cover phones.

As said. He needs to get it reported.
EE should be able to offer a payment plan however depending on the amount, they maybe looking for a decent amount a month.

If this is in Europe do EE not have the roaming spending cap enabled, i believe its £35 a day but could be wrong? But as per the below it needs to be reported ASAP so the network can stop any further charges.

With EE or T-Mobile, you cannot use data without buying a Roaming package. If you are with Orange.....

When he gets a replacement SIM, have him put a PIN lock on it. That way, once the phone is re-started or the SIM is removed, it needs the PIN is required to use it.

I meant in reality, not strictly legally.

Yes, the whole family are on one contract. And yes he will eventually pay us back but he's on minimum wage, zero hours contract so we will have to pay it first.somehow. Apparently EE realised something was wrong before we did and referred it to their fraud dept. we are still waiting to hear from them but if he didn't report it to the police there isn't much hope. And of course, because he is a young lad abroad we can't get in touch with him...we have left an urgent message at his hotel.
