in Water bills
after i got a massive bill.
the water board came out and he put his ear thing and said the water was gushing through. i have a leak. i think its the fittings on the meter. they say it could be in my property, my kitchen tap has got a little intermitent leak which is being fixed.
now i have used 3 yrs water in 5 mths aparently. who is liable for that if the leak is between the meter and my stop !!!!?
i could not have known about the leak. they are fixing it free, even if its in my house.
can they request full payment or would they right it off? could i claim on the house insurance?

You are liable for everything beyond the meter. You would have known about it by reading the meter more often.
Even if you didn't know, it's in your property, so you are liable for the usage. Many water utilities will do a free one-time repair, but that doesn't mean they'll also write off the bill for the leakage.
House insurance won't cover wear and tear, it would only cover accidental damage (if for example you broke the pipe while digging the garden). No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Depends which water co you are with. I'm with Anglian and they will credit you with the lost water providing it's repaired within 30 days.
You take two readings two weeks apart after its been repaired and they'll make an estimate of how much they think you've lost. We had a leak a couple of years agoand got £120 back which corresponded with my estimate of our loss.
I used to read it randomly, every 4-6 weeks or so that's how I discovered the leak I now read the meter weekly.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
if its the fittings on the meter box you are not liable for the lost water so dont worry0
