Tiny houses

I'm intrigued by these, and can see a big advantage for people saving up for a deposit. Has anyone any experience of similar living, where did you find to site your tiny home? http://www.motherhoodunscripted.com/?p=6006

The Pixie Cabin gets my vote.

I like cleverly used space and good design. It's not quite the same thing but very recently I changed my mind from wanting to buy a 4 bedroom detached house to a 2 bedroom flat. The more space I have the more crap I'll buy to fill it and since I live alone I can only use 1 toilet bowl at a time.

You can !!!!!!, shower and shave in a shed but you better be on very good terms with other occupants :)

  • I think they're cute and make much better use of space than many places and I would fancy having one.

But, having said that, I don't actually know where most people could find to site one/the vast majority of them have those "upper level" bedrooms I couldn't use personally (as I'd wonder whether I'd be falling out of bed and "down a level" with a bump). Also - you'd have to have a very "outward-oriented" way of living (ie using community facilities for a lot of things and not being a home body type person). Its getting more difficult to use community facilities all the time - eg with libraries having shorter opening hours than they used to have or being shut altogether etc etc.

So I'm wondering if they are better suited to somewhere where there is a better climate than many in Britain have and someone who is in good health (and never has one too many to drink) - thinking of that "upper level" bedroom.

Add my cynicism that it would suit the powers-that-be/some people if people were prepared to cram themselves into an even smaller place than recently built "toytown houses" with their tiny amount of square footage and virtually zilch storage and it would be possible to cram even more people into Britain if people could be convinced it was possible/indeed "fun" to live in such a small place.

I still think they look cute and some of their spacesaving ways could be adapted to help with living in "toytown" houses - but I'm having reservations about them now.

Glorified sheds - they may be insulated, but what about damp issues?
Would you really like to live next door to a property where the owner decides to install half a dozen of these in their garden and rent them out to students??
