I agree with the others that going from nothing to a half marathon in a few weeks is guaranteed to give you sore knees! I had exactly the same experience last year. If your cardiovascular fitness is pretty good it's very easy to get carried away and run far too far when your legs just aren't strong enough. I got really sore knees, pushed on anyway, and ended up messing up my ITB.

I'd be looking at doing some strength training (especially your glutes and hips, as that seems to be where the problems usually lie), rather than looking at your shoes. There's lots of articles about this online if you google, and lots of suggested workouts on youtube.

Thanks for the warning. I certainly don't want any injuries!

I'm a sports therapist and see this quite often when people take up running. Shoe-wise, I believe you get what you pay for (I love my Brooks Glycerins) and it is worth trying Sweatshop or similar for a proper shoe fitting and gait analysis (often free). A common mistake new runner make is elongating their stride to go faster, which means the foot is landing infront of the body which puts more strain in the quads, ITB and knees. Shorter faster strides are the way to go, take less effort and have less impact on your legs. Worth watching the likes of Mo Farah to see how quickly they turn their legs over.

Longer strides seem so much more natural. On my last run I did as short strides as possible and was landing on the flat of my foot more. I did start to get the hang of it but it did take a lot of thought. I found if I leant forward it helped but I was then running with my head looking down. I like to run with my head up to look around.

It took me a while to get used to shorter strides but as a long distance/ultra runner it's worth it's weight in gold when you nail it. How are you finding the NB trainers?

The NB trainers are great. Really comfy and springy.

Did 10k yesterday, my right knee was slightly painful after, today feels ok though.

Well done 5 weeks of weekend 10ks with a short 1.5 mile midweek run and yesterday went straight back to half marathon again! It went well knocked 8 minutes off my time and no knee pain :)
