Sorry, had no idea the Hitler Gang has raised it's ugly heads again - I will don't panic Mr Mainwaring & renew online! :D

    Thanks to all.

Yawn, Yawn. do you derive pleasure from this? We all know what is meant so why try for the Pedant of the Year award?

I dispute the 'We all know' bit.

It gives me no pleasure at all - but I'll keep pushing/correcting it because so many people don't know - some actually think that the money goes towards building and repairing roads.

Some folks even still call it 'Road Fund Licence'.

I'll keep posting about it every time I see it and perhaps eventually you won't have to call me a pedant for highlighting the truth of the matter.

If you have ever been on the receiving end of an irate motorist shouting at a cyclist (like me) that "You don't even pay road tax - get off the road onto the cycle-path/pavement." then you might understand why VED is still misunderstood by the greater public.

A little kid buying a packet of sweets pays 'road-tax' as all the tax in the UK goes into a common 'pot'.

Ah it becomes clear: Iceweasel is a cyclist with a chip on both shoulders.

Not sure about the two chips - as I also occasionally drive a big truck or a large van, as well as the car and the bike - plus I have a big trailer which often causes frustration as I'm nominally limited to 60mph with it and some folks don't like that.

Everything you buy, wear, eat or use - comes on a truck.

I haven't got enough shoulders mate. :rotfl:

I just try to see things from all perspectives.

There are too many blinkered drivers around.

It's quite true, I've known for years that the 'Road Tax' in fact goes straight into the Chancellor's back pocket - whoever's in power. Anyway, when I say "road tax disc" I am speaking colloquially of something which faces all motorists and has to be dealt with practically, as distinct from philosophically or - in the immediate present - politically. Many thanks for the good advice on this at MSE, I now know what to do in the light of the new DVLA online system :)

OK, so I renewed online, old disc is about to expire. How do I know my renewal was successful though - since DVLA no longer send anything out, except reminders?

    Thanks

An entry on your bank statement would be good evidence. Either the direct debit if you chose to pay monthly or the transaction itself.

You get an email confirmation through when you tax online, unless you didn't give them your email address.

Thanks - it just says "tax not due" which presumably means 'has been paid'?
