sent a bill for an imaginary speeding ticket from insurance

Renewed my insurance last month. When doing the quotes I did one for a made up 3 points for speeding just to see how much it would affect it. Obviously didn't buy this one. Finally bought one and clicked all the boxes to say everything is true.
Today I receive a bill for 80 pounds because the car insurance people have found another quote where I had a speeding fine, so they've assumed the policy I bought is incorrect so without even asking me or the dvla have adjusted it and sent me a letter to say they will be taking this extra money from my card!
Seriously what are they on? I will have to call an expensive number mon-fri probably wage loads of money and time to fix this ridiculous assumption they've made!

I'm not quite sure how it's a "ridiculous assumption". You've told them - or one of their sister companies, or somebody they have an information-sharing agreement with - that you have a speeding ticket on your licence. Then you've told them that you don't.
Were you asked for your driving licence number as part of the quote? Did you give it? If so, they would be able to look up the details, and know exactly what you do or don't have. If not, they have to go on the information you supply...0 -
Write to them, with your DL number, explain the error and ask them to check.
Can I ask why you did it? I can understand doing quotes with different annual mileage, different cars, an additional driver etc but not a non-existing speeding ticket unless you were looking at potentially not disclosing an actual ticket.0 -
Your error was to not use a made-up name when getting your quotes.
I would hazard a guess that you either used a comparison site or the companies were part of the same group.Never Knowingly Understood.

Yes it is a ridiculous assumption - they should have confirmed their suspicions before amending an agreed contract!0

I used a comparison website and the company I bought from is part of admiral. How did you guess that?
Thanks I'll try to get this silly assumption sorted out using a cheaper number!0 -
I'd let them take it then, because you can obviously prove there was no ticket, demand a refund plus compensation.
You agreed a price and they have taken more than they are due.
Play them at their own game.0 -
I did it as I'm a curious person. I thought a quote was that, just a quote not a data mining mission to try to charge more money.0

IIRC, the FOS dealt with a similar matter and wrapped the insurer for using the information0
