Vodafone default - Credit Check Issue

Options
Hello,

Apologies if this has been mentioned before,

I have recently decided to start thinking about getting a mortgage, and upon a credit check noticed I have a 'default' left on my account by Vodafone.

I was with Vodafone for 48 months, never missed a payment. Once my second contract had ended, instead of upgrading the phone myself (I wanted to change to three) I contacted Vodafone and asked them to change everything to my (now ex) partners details, and that I didn't want anything in that account to be linked with me.

After breaking up and losing contact with my partner who now had my old contract, a few months down the line I started to receive calls from Vodafone asking for payments. Rang Vodafone to find out that the account had been cut off for numerous missed payments and that I needed to pay. After contacting my ex partner and getting her to pay off the outstanding balance the account was settled.

Forward to now, looking for a mortgage and after a brief credit check realising I have a very poor score due to this? Phoned Vodafone for them to tell me that even though I had switched the account names, it was still connected to me.

Is there any advice on this situation, or any help I may be able to contact?

Thank you.

You can contact the Vodafone rep on here as per the instructions on the many Vodafone threads.

Meanwhile, did you switch the account names in full or was it just the payment details ?
If you switched account names did you agree to stand as guarantor ?
Do you have anything in writing for when account was changed ?
Did your partner have a credit check done when the account was transferred ?
It's not just about the money

If you switched only the payment details, you remain liable for the contract, and for any defaults.
Voda could only have switched the account into another name with their agreement, not simply at your request.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

1 - I switched the account in full. Address, Name & payment details.
2 - There wasn't anything ever mentioned as a guarantor.
3 - Unfortunately I have nothing in writing as all my Vodafone bills etc were dealt electronically and now my account is closed I'm unable to access any old bills etc.
4 - Unsure as to weather Vodafone carried out a credit check on her, it was a pretty simple 5 minute process over the phone which was accepted almost immediately.

Thanks for your reply, have tried contacting Vodafone but it's a nightmare to get through to anyone who understands, I just keep getting the same answers: "Our records show the account was still in your name". Strange because all the payments etc was coming out of her account until the payments were missed.

That would sound like it was just payment details that were changed rather than the full account.
There would have been a credit check on your partner before the change was accepted.

  • Ah I see. That possibly might be were it's gone wrong then. Although I did state numerous times I would like a FULL transfer of the account to her, as I was going to close it in the first place anyway until she said she'd take it.

I've spoken to my ex who is more than happy for Vodafone to contact her, and she's willing to accept the poor credit on her behalf, as it was her mess in the first place. Is this possible?

    Thanks!

From what you've said I wouldn't think so without Vodafone's blessing.

That's your ONLY chance. On the face of it there's nothing you can do - and Vodafone certainly won't help. However, the Web Relations Team DO where they can.
