What methods would be available if the Garage were left in place and therefore limited access? Wheelbarrows would not be ideal as the hole would be BIG.

Is there some kind of machinery that will pump hardcore/topsoil into the hole from a truck? (at the risk of a daft question).

Filling in a pool is expensive.

We ended up using a local contractor to put heavy duty wooden beams across the top of the pool ,and we now have a swimming pool shaped decking area at less that half the cost of filling it in ( plus it can be converted back to a pool if a future buyer prefers that)

I visited a garden once where an old swimming pool had been turned into a wildlife pond and bog garden - http://www.ngs.org.uk/gardens/find-a-garden/garden.aspx?id=2108621086%20%2806%29.jpg

We had an old block and liner swimming pool which we recently filled in..
In our case, as we never took away the soil when the pool was first built, we were able to fill the pool in using the soil already in the garden. Most of the blocks were left in the hole. The liner was taken away.
You do need to make sure that everything is broken up first, and it isn't compacted too hard, as otherwise you'll have drainage problems like we have..

We used a local landscape gardening company.

I'd turn it into a fish pond or wildlfe pond as above. Or, build a roof and use it as a sunken external games room or wine cellar or some other living space, that'd be cool, i want one now.

deck over the top with a sump pump to pump out any water. saves the expense of filling it in and allows it to be restated by a future owner.

I'd simply walk away and look for another house!

We had a rough quote about three years ago of £6k-£7k ,for a site with muiltiple access difficulties.
