How to fill in swimmimg pool?

A house I am interested in has an old swimming pool in the back garden. I don't really know anything about swimming pools, their maintenance, and the cost of maintenance - but I don't particularly want a swimming pool in the back garden.
How could this be filled in?
Another problem is that there is no access to the back garden for machinery etc - because the garage blocks access. I would probably have to demolish the garage to gain access.

there are any number of ways of filling in a hole in the ground and any number of methods of getting the stuff there to do so
obviously you must ensure it is no longer watertight unless you deliberately want a "bog" garden feature
the rest is a question of how much you are prepared to spend on machinery rather than labour (or vice versa!) to cart the stuff in with and how deep you want the top soil to be before you hit the underlying any old stuff used to infill it with0 -
I'm now trying to recall the name of the style of "greenhouse" that is built partly underground and supposed to be a very good idea for growing food in.
I'd be glad of the chance of an old swimming pool personally and would be exploring what was involved in transforming it into one.
Might be an idea?0 -
Hi, Just a quick tip! I needed access to my back garden with a digger to dig out for a patio.
I had the back of my garage knocked out, I bought a electric roller shutter door from Ebay & fitted it on the rear off the garage.
I now have access to the back garden through the garage.
Obviously I can't get a big JCB in there, but it's a really handy addition.
The brickwork cost £400 & the door was £500. Remember I still have the garage to use.0 -
Now many councils are now charging for DIY waste, you might find many people via small ads who would be glad to off load rubble by wheelbarrow, though you'd need to stress clean stone & soil, no asbestos etc. and then monitor them.
The swimming pool greenhouse idea sounds great, till you remember that the pool will be (probably) > 4' deep and the water table may be well above that in wet weather. As you have to smash the base in places to allow water out, the same points will allow it in again!
A decent-sized digger can get through a 4' gap.0 -
He's right about frrecycle... I've got about 3cuM of concrete sat here you'd be more than welcome to...0

I imagine the edges of the pool are concrete and stone so break it down tip in the pool then cover with topsoil? When using the housing forum please use the sticky threads for valuable information.0

Have you ever broken up reinforced concrete?
Of course it might not be that, as it could be steel or something else, but a concrete pool would need reinforcement, while the base/foundations would also need to be substantial.
That's why a digger would be preferable, if it is of traditional concrete construction/concrete panels.0 -

What methods would be available if the Garage were left in place and therefore limited access? Wheelbarrows would not be ideal as the hole would be BIG.
Is there some kind of machinery that will pump hardcore/topsoil into the hole from a truck? (at the risk of a daft question).0 -

You can hire conveyer belts which could convey the topsoil over the top of the garage from a truck. Probably not cheap though.
