Nowhere in the dla/pip form does it ask you what your extra costs are. Even on .GOV.UK it says money can be spent how you like. Nobody audits it.

So it is quite acceptable for a PIP/DLA award to be spend on a cruise in the summer and a 4 week break in Malta for the winter?

I only mention this as there has been a recent thread on this topic that said that many disabled people don't have any extra costs due to their disability. Some do, some don't.

You could spend it all in fruit machines, if you really wanted to.

I think you will find that YOU said you didn't have any extra costs for your disability that you claimed DLA for 19 years and that one, perhaps two agreed with you while the rest disagreed, hardly many people.

You can even buy your wife a Mulberry bag with the money
Its not that we have more patience as we grow older, its just that we're too tired to care about all the pointless drama ;)

Which brings me back to my argument a while back. Why and how are they allowed to claim it if it all goes in the fruit machine, and what is being done to weed out those that have sufficient capital themselves without the need to claim?

Which blew the original statement out of the water when a poster said that ALL disabled people have extra costs.
Some do and some don't. Those that don't have no need to make a claim and on that point a more rigorous examination of their needs should be undertaken by ATOS/DWP. A simple exercise I would imagine once they have established what their needs actually are and whether they would cost money.

  • Thanks for your help those who have given advice. But just for the record, personally, my disabilities DO incur extra costs, that is why I claimed, and at the moment, as my claim has been turned down, it is very hard to get by due to the extra costs my disabilities cause me.
