We want your top tips on going abroad for medical or dental treatment. If you've ever done it, how did it go? Was it good or bad and would you recommend it? We'd also like your tips for others considering getting involved.

I had a very good time in Chiang Mai and found a dental practice recommended by various westerners who lived there. For the price of £1500, (not implants) I had a load of work done in a week. I had 5 visits, almost one a day and each visit was with an expert in his own field. Apart from this taking months in the UK, it would have cost about 5 times as much over here as it wouldn't have been done on the NHS. Definately get recommendations as not all are good.Scire tuum nihil est, nisi te scire hoc sciat alter :cool:0

I was visiting family in the U.S. about 2 years ago and managed to get poison ivy while working in my father's garden. I had never had poison ivy before and it was quite bad. The over the counter ointments weren't doing anything so I went to a local doctor who also said it was quite bad. In any case he prescribed me a few things and said 'It shouldn't be too expensive' when he found out I was living in the UK. I went to the pharmacy and the bill came to about $220! When I told them what the doctor had said they 'recalculated' and managed to bring it down by half. Go figure.
I am moving back to the U.S. next year, it is going to be quite a shock.0 -
I was taken ill in darkest Washington state. The local doctor was called & gave me an injection. She refused any payment. When I got home I tried to send her some flowers by Interflora but they wouldn't take the order as her address was "too remote".
I had my ears syringed in Florida, $115 & 7 pages of forms to fill in.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0 -
I booked ahead for a crown check-up clean and any other possible dental work while on a 10 day stop over in Bangkok and found the work not as cheap as I was told .. the dentist (US trained) only did 2 days a week so no follow up appointments were possible (booked up) after the clean and gum to tooth filler was done and this was done badly and has been finished off when I returned home to London. I will do my homework and read about and possibly give it another go next time but am very happy to save up and go to my local dentist. Anyone got good advice on where to go for implants?0

I am considering going to Hungary for dental treatment. Has anybody got experience of this?0

I needed a dental crown, and since the work in the UK was rather expensive I visited a dentist in Zurich. When I heard the price --- the equivalent of £1,500 -- I decided that the UK was not such a rip-off after all.0

I had dental treatment in Slovakia. I have 8 implants (i think) and had my remaining teeth fitted with crowns. I cannot praise them enough. It cost around a third of the price I would have paid in the UK. I go for a quick checkup visit once a year and see the hygienist while Im there. The hygienist is far superior to any I have visited in the UK. Six years on Im still singing their praises.0

I had an MRI scan in Ho Chi Minh City at Cho Ray Hospital which has a clinic for foreigners, cost $100, results inconclusive at the time (and subsequently the symptoms disappeared). I didn't claim on my insurance as the cost was about the same as my excess.0

I got treatment in Italy with an E111 form, now replaced with an EHIC, always keep an eye on the expiry date and renew as necessary.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

Like Lesanne15 I've had extensive dental treatment but mine was in Didim in Turkey. Surgery open 24/7 so some of the appts were quite bizarre as in 9 pm - 2 am for instance... Did the prep work 6 mths before and then had implants and mini-implants once all had annealed. Very satisfied as all done for under £5k including air fares..0
