Anyone know of any insurers who cover (comprehensively) the policy holder to drive a garage-supplied courtesy car during a routine service (not accident repair)?

Used o be quite common but I'm fed up trawling through the policy documents unsuccessfully....

I'd expect the garage's insurance to cover you.

Recently my insurer (Direct Line) covered for free, but wanted to know vehicle details first. The garage wanted £10 per day to add me to their cover

if it's a 'courtsey' car it should be free, your current insurer may also supply a 'courtesy car'.

However it best to check with the garage first.

Ask the garage/service centre about insurance for the courtesy car. Most will put you on their's but at a cost (and usually with a large excess). If there is a charge then ask your own insurer, they may insure you for free.

Whatever you do don't just assume that you'll be covered to drive it.

Aviva's definition of own car includes a garage courtesy car too, or at least my Cert states:
any vehicle loaned to the vehicle policyholder for a maximum of seven days from a garage, motor engineer or vehicle repairer while the vehicle registration described above is being either serviced, repaired or having a MOT test

Some garages will cover it as standard anyway but it may have a chunky excess as previously mentioned

You may be able to get temporary cover under your insurer.

LV is similar and they don't give a limit - "Your car = the insured vehicle shown on your schedule. As well as any vehicle loaned or hired to you under our Recommended Repairer Service or by a member of the motor trade while the insured vehicle is in custody of the motor trade for service, repair or MOT."

Having said that some garages may require to see a cover note with their car details on so your insurer may charge for this.

    Thanks for the replies.

Yes, of course the garage will insure, but
    a) usually with a high excess
    b) often for an admin fee to add you to their policy

Yes, most insurers will allow you to add the courtesy car temporarily onto your policy. But most will charge an admin fee for the paperwork and/or fee for a week's insurance.

Aviva & Direct Line? I looked at both their policy documents online, and definitions etc and it appeared they did not cover this. I'll ring and ask - cheers.

    LV - cheers.

For Aviva it was on the policy cert, in my case, and not in the policybook so may be a policy benefit that they are being bad at advertising.

DL certainly didnt used to offer it for free unless in connection with a repair being done under the policy.

All insurers will allow you to add a car to your policy as a temporary additional vehicle but there are often admin fees to pay if not also additional premiums
