Help how to fill holes in old plaster walls

I have stripped the wallpaper off in my hall and some of the old plaster is not in a great state, wallpaper can cover a lot up! I don't really want to get it skimmed/replastered as we are planning to move, so want to wallpaper with a lightly embossed paper. But a few places need filling, one next to the front door (think it was disturbed when new front door fitted) has a hole about 10 cm x 6 cm and back to the brickwork.
How do you fill a whole that deep and whats best for filling the small dents/holes.
Also in quite a few places the surface of the plaster seems crumbly and wonder if there is something I could put on the walls as I am not sure the wallpaper paste will stick to the crumbly bits!
Thanks in advance, any advice appreciated as am feeling daunted by the task, it is a long hall with 7 doors off it and am wondering what have I done.

Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.

Hi,
You'll be best buying some PVA, mixing 1 part PVA with 3 parts water and painting it on the crumbly bits and the bits that need filling. This will stop the crumbly bits crumbling and prime the holes ready for filling.
Then fill the holes with plaster or polyfiller then smooth it over with a wet trowel. If you make a bit of a mess of it you can sand it level with the surrounding wall.
