  • If i was him, i would go old school.

Pop the phone in a safe in the hotel, take a camera instead, buy a phone-card for the odd call home. Cut the mobile cord for 2 weeks and enjoy it.

When back at the hotel (assuming free wifi) use social media ect on the mobile - making sure to turn off data / roaming

It doesn't cost anything to take a photo on the phone.

But if you want to share the photo that's a different matter.

Take the pics, and then do all your surfing, and sharing and all the rest of it, including FaceTime and Skype and Facepalm, when on WiFi.

I would have thought everyone knows this by now.

(data roaming turned off at all times of course)

i am fairly sure that 99% of all adults know this as you so rightly state, however most kids of today are surgically attached to a mobile, i pay my sons bill hence i want no nasty surprises of £20k phone bills which is why i originally posted my question seeking others thought's on the subject.

if you don't trust your son not to follow the rules with his mobile abroad, you're right to protect your pocket and get him a payg sim to put in his phone for Turkey.

In fairness, if the son cannot restrict his sharing to wifi, he needs a talking to.

Especially if his parent is funding all this.

Too much lenience for kids these days.

I use my smart phone without a sim in it, so no worries about accidentally using roaming data. I have an old Nokia into which I put my sim card when in Turkey just for the odd texts I might need to make.

Bought a cheap £15 phone form Tesco. Then bought a sim which gave me £20 credit, plus a spanish number. OK. Its not got a camera, but it was great for letting worried grandson know we were in Majorca safely.
Take the sim out of smartphone and Bobs your uncle. No £20k bill :-)

trusting my son is not an issue nor was it part of my original post, the fact is i do trust my son, i was merely seeking advice on my best option to avoid any chance of anything going wrong and getting a hefty phone bill to boot.

Anyway thanks for all the replies i think i will invest in an el cheapo payg sim and give the o2 app tugo a whirl.

The other thing to watch out for is the phone getting stolen and a massive bill being run up by the thief - there are professional theives who steal phones in order to run up massive bills to premium rate numbers which they get a cut of. As high as £23,000 has been reported

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-30429347

They are talking about capping stolen bills but not sure if this has come into effect yet, and even if they do it'll probably come with conditions such as reporting within a certain amount of time.

So it's essential with any contract mobile to have a SIM PIN set, and a phone PIN/pattern lock which automatically sets. Even these won't stop some theives as I believe there are ways around it, but it should slow them down at least to give time to report it.

Go PAYG, contrary to popular belief it's not really more expensive as long as you make sensible use of packs/bundles, it can be cheaper for a lot of people even without a "free" :rotfl:phone (which is the same concept as a "free lunch")

Also if he gets a separate PAYG SIM, make sure he doesn't leave the contract SIM lying around!

That is what I was going to do - but I have been told by people I know who live in Turkey that to put a Turkish sim in a UK purchased phone you need to register the phone. Apparently this can cost a lot more that buying a cheap phone and PAYG Turkish Sim.

You can take a unlocked MiFi unit with you without having to register it.

You don't have to register in Turkey now for short stays.
It used to be the case.
