Stolen jacket at school

My son had an exam today and they were told to leave their jackets in a designated area. When he came out he found that his jacket has been taken alongside a bag belonging to another pupil. The school have said that there isn't a lot that they can do about it. Surely it's down to the school to ensure things like this do not happen?

What does everyone think and what would you do?

Do schools not use lockers any more?

I assume the GCSE pupils handed back their lockers when they finished school before exams.

I'd speak to the school again and check that they really aren't going to do anything. They could ask other pupils if they saw anything or check that nobody 'took them by mistake' in the rush to get out afterwards. I suppose you could say you'll be calling the Police to spur the school into action. There probably isn't too much they can do but they can do a little and it might help find the jacket and bag.

I don't see how the school can be expected to do anything about it. Do they have any CCTV that can be reviewed?

I was always nervous handing in my photo as everyone just picked up there's on the way out, so I sympathise.

It's possible this will become a topic of conversation in the year group and the culprit will be outed.

The school made him leave the jacket, they're liable. Can't have it both ways.

There is likely something in the school handbook that says that schools do not accept liability for lost or stolen items.

Not a lot you can do I'm afraid.

Provided they weren't told to leave bags and jackets at home, then the school is liable. They forced removal and wouldn't allow them to enter the exam room. Therefore it's the school's problem. They can't simply claim slopey shoulders and no liability as, without some sort of pre-warning tell them to leave them at home, the students had no other option. xxx

    I'd be mightily hacked off.

Then when I'd done being hacked off, I'd realise that the school really can't do much now its gone.

And they certainly wouldn't be reimbursing me either.

Then I'd be annoyed all over again.

Then I'd realise that it just wasn't worth being hacked off over as nothing was going to change.

And I'd make sure nothing else went to school that wasn't left inside a room where my kid was going to be.

Disagree. If the school state that they do not accept liability, that disclaimer is invalidated by requiring the pupil to part company with his jacket.
