Hitchhikers - where did they go and would you pick up

Hi,

Was driving back to home after off-site work location. Had about 80 miles to go when I saw 2 Hitchhikers (HH).

I remember being a HH when I was a student way back in the 80's. But you just don't see them anymore.

Is that because public transport got cheaper or did the lifts dry up?

would you stop for HH to break up long journey?

Maybe your not looking or in the wrong place?

Still plenty around, Ive picked up a few guys with the trade plates who have
delivered cars and save their return fare money for better things.

Too many people scared of their own shadow these days.

The trade plate guys are generally expecting a lift off another delivery driver rather that a 'Joe public'
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

only seen the guys with trade plates at the M-way junctions, never thought to pick them up, as i guessed that the next hgv would be more likely to stop.

It used to be a good money saving practice, but looks like its on its way out.

I wouldn't pick one up, I don't think they would want to share a car with a bonkers toddler either.

Never hitchhiked, my cousin did it once and was seriously sexually assaulted.

I used to hitchhike and I still pick them up. Usually people trying to get into town or back.

Did you pick them up if not it may answer your own question about lifts drying up
I hitchhiked a few times back in the 70s, got a lift in a jenson interceptor once

A lot of the hitchhikers here are scrotes trying to get home from court. Which as a rural area can be a long way.
I often picked them(general hitchers) up in the 90's. Had some quite interesting chats with some very interesting people.
Aussie travellers and a school teacher who had to travel 40m to work and hitched regularly are two that stick in my mind.
This is the main route to the NI ferry.
Nowadays just see the odd one with a trade plate(and the court scrotes!) depending on how full of stuff the car is I may pick up the trade plate ones.

As we live rurally I generally pick people up, often in dire need (broken down no AA etc). Not many around generally. Did HH self after ridge walks, people giving me lifts were the best people ever.
