If I sign up to a new mobile provider today can I arrange for the change over to happen in 3 weeks time?

Depends who you sign up with. Some suppliers will only allow you to port your number in at the point of ordering, whilst others will allow you port in at any time.

I wanted to move from Giffgaff to Talktalk.
Talktalk are offering £60 cashback at the moment and £12 all in sim only rolling contract.
Any idea how I can find out without spoiling my chance of getting cashback?

Looks like talk talk will allow porting at any time, as your new sim needs to be active before you can apply to port in your old number.
You can't specify when it happens, you'll need to time things yourself.
Just got this help page here..

  • Be careful Talktalk use the Vodafone network. I had a sim only contract with them and the data/download speeds were abysmal. Sometimes wouldn't connect up, slow to download.

'Signing up' doesn't automatically port your number over, to do that you need your PAC from the existing provider. You can sign up today and then port using the PAC at any time within 30 days from receipt of the PAC.

So when does the new contract start...
When I sign up or when I activate the sim?

The PAC expires 30 days from date of issue-but that has no correlation whatsoever with the date you start your new contract.
