It's a straight forward repair. Its quite reasonable to at least expect an estimate before entering a contract for the repair especially since, in this case, there appears to be no need for any diagnostic work.

On the face of it, it is a straight forward repair, but no one knows if there is further damage out of sight and these days a lot of people take a estimate as being the absolute maximum you will be charged, even PCW are not that stupid (well maybe they are ...).

To be honest, I really do not know what the OP expects, taking it to PCW to get repaired, really... that's the shock of this thread ! :rotfl:

Doesn't add up, that's £31.75 plus the VAT of course

    I suspect a 3 & 5 typo.

Actually, no I didn't pay them anything - indeed the laptop didn't even make it out of the bag once I realised that they would charge me £50 just to look at it and an unkown amount of money to actually fix it..... it's this methodology that disturbs me - most customers of pc world would have just gone with it.
What I am annoyed about is that this sharp sales practice is, in my opinion, a modern method of ransom. Praying on the general public's lack of knowledge and fear. It's just like the sharp intake of breath by an old fashioned car mechanic as they are charging you a non refunable £50 just to take a look at an obviously flat tyre but won't even quote you on the cost of a replacemen until they have your £50.

Yes they would, because all the flash signage, dtaff uniforms and brand advertising makes them trustworthy.

As I found out when running a PC/laptop repair business......
You can have the best prices around, you can even do "no fix, no fee", but most people will still go to the high street shops to speak to some clueless salesman and leave it in the hands of a young lad who's barely out of nappies.

    ^^ This - Exactly..

The flash signage etc says the the average Joe/non techie/old person that they must be the best place to take your tech.

When in reality they are just a bunch of clowns on minimum wage ..
As said previously, experience costs money .. And PC world aren't paying

    never said it added up

    £1.75 for the bulb
    £30 for fitting

+ an extra £50 for fred to tell you if he can do it

    no total price given

however in a normal shop this would be £31.75 , (£30 + £1.75 for the bulb)

in PC worlds eyes it would be £81.75 , (£30 for fitting , £1.75 for the Bulb and an EXTRA <greed tax> of £50 for asking fred to do it

fred is of course on PC world wages , he does not get it , PC world keep it as <greed tax>
