My wife has Indefinite leave to Remain- She is able to work in the UK but is a housewife. I am retired. My question is this-Is she eligible to transfer her tax allowance to me? Or is this reservered for full citizens?
Yes, I'm in the situation and applied and got this. Just takes a 10 min call to HMRC from you and the Mrs.0 -

If in doubt, claim anyway; HMRC will soon tell you if you do not qualify.Warning: In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

Just wanted to double check that I'm not owe this £400+ tax rebate ! So I earn 11,150 a year before tax and my hubby earns 35,000 a year Does this mean that we are not eligible ?0

As you both earn over the personal tax allowance you are not eligible (although you may be able to actually do it). It is not extra money, it is transferring a portion of one partners unused tax allowance to the other.0

.For 2016/17 You can transfer the marriage allowance to your husband if your income is less than £11000. For 2015/16 the figure was £10600
As your income is more than that if you were to transfer the £1100 allowances to him he would pay £220 less tax and you would pay £220 more so there is no point in you transferring the allowance.0 -

You haven't given us enough information to answer your question.
Another victim of MSE's inability to avoid gutter-selling (as in "cheaper than the cheapest" energy deals).
To answer your question you would need to tell us both your and your husband's adjusted taxable incomes for 2015/16 and estimated adjusted taxable income for 2016/17 - and even then, the answer would be subject to the accuracy of your estimate.
When will MSE ditch their hyperbole?0 -
This allowance is incredibly annoying, me and my wife are both earning over the threshold but combined incomes are lower than the highest allowed for one of the earners, this isn't helping people worse off at all0

Hubby and I did the transfer for last year successfully, my tax code from a small pension was altered so I assume that I don't have to ask HMRC to do the transfer again this year? Is it automatically carried on from year to year?
I took our this year's accounts to our accountant this morning and asked him this question and he didn't know the answer??!! He has only done it about twice for clients.
I do wonder if he is actually on top of the job. He is not old and doddery, he is a 40 something chap and I think has his chartered accountants certification.
Makes me wonder.0
