Marriage Allowance

I have taken some cash from a pension
Have you taken only the pension commencement lump sum?0 -
I have a rental property which has a mortgage, I had the opportunity to reduce the mortgage amount to get a better rate, I took approx £4000 tax free and also approx £5000 as income. I get approx £1000 pa profit from the rental and I have a casual job which seems to have dried up.
I paid approx £1300 tax on the income so expect £1000+ as a rebate.
I have this natural instinct - probably a generational thing - avoid the tax man! When I sit down and think about it there is no reason for that at all!0 -
If you don't have any savings income (i.e.building society or bank interest) then it's very straightforward to work out.
Add up taxable pension received plus rental profits plus job income then deduct 9900 and whatever is left you have to pay tax on. Multiply that by 20% and that gives you your tax bill for 2015:16. Then compare that to the tax deducted (if any) from the job and pension payment and that's your refund amount :beer:0 -
I applied again for the marriage allowance for 2016-17 and it has gone through but I just telephoned about the amount for 2015-2016 (which they just said was £210) as I applied for that but heard nothing. I have been told that although I applied for it at the time, my husband needs to ring to request a recalculation now that his tax code has been adjusted. So it was possible to do it again.
Just for anyone who has read this but added things that are not there - I knew before and know now who is entitled to the rebate 🙄0 -
Hi
Can someone give me some info please? My FIL died on 10th April 2016 and before his death they were intending to give him part of my MILs tax allowance. Unfortunately due to his illness they were unable to do this before his death and after his death we were told that as he had been alive all of 2015/6 tax year it could be claimed for that year. My MIL tried to do it online but apparently it didnt go through and the bereavement department cant do it because he is showing up as dead on their system. They have asked us to send a letter which I have and am waiting for a reply. Should they allow this please after all if he had still be alive they would have been able to do it for 2015/6 and it seems wrong if they cant now just because he is dead. Any thoughts/advice please? Thanks0 -
As I understand it the lower earner (MIL) could have applied for MA and transferred allowances for both years however I believe a claim can only be made if both parties are married at the time of the claim and as your FIL sadly died before the claim was made it will no longer be possible to apply for this for 2015:16 (or 2016:17).
I wouldn't waste money on a stamp as an application cannot now be made0 -
Hi, my wife began her first 20k a year job in November 2015. I earn quite a bit more, but because her earnings for the year would be under the Marriage Tax Allowance threshold we applied to get our tax codes changed just before the end of the 2015/2016 tax year.
This year, of course, she will be earning over the threshold so I want to cancel the Tax Allowance so I don't get stung with a tax demand. However, when I use the government website to cancel, it tells me that it will cancel all Marriage Allowance from 6 April 2015, the start of the tax year we first received it.
As I'm still hoping to receive a backdated payment, I don't want to cancel last year's allowance but I'm not sure what to do. I guess I'll have to phone up the taxman for advice but I wondered if anyone else can bring any clarity to this issue? :doh:0 -

Have her do it rather than you.0 -
If you wife cancels the transfer it will be cancelled from the end of this tax year.
You cannot backdate the cancellation to 6 April 2016.
You wont get stung with a tax demand. Your wife's code number will be restricted until the end of the current year and you will have the extra allowance until then, unless your level of income prevents the transfer.0 -
Just a quick question, I applied for the marriage allowance online in April.for my parents who are 78 and 79.
I got the email saying it had all been sorted and my Dad got a new tax code sent through but they have yet to receive a cheque for the backdated amount from last year. I remember reading on here somewhere that it wasn't going to happen until July but since it is now nearly end of August as I was wondering if anyone had received a cheque for last year's tax year yet?
