Marriage Allowance

any chance Martin could highlight that people can claim this marriage allowance, not married couples allowance,.I completed our tax credit claim a week last friday and thankfully whilst on the hmrc website noticed the above allowance.after reading through the conditions i realised we were eligible and applied to transfer to my wife a portion of my tax allowance. the hmrc website says it can take 8 weeks for checks to be made and any payment sent. This morning my wife has received a cheque for last years backdating of 210.20 which is like winning the lottery for us.
Well done the HMRC for being so efficient.
BUt i wonder how many more couples in the same financial struggle as us still arent aware they can claim..should the hmrc do more being has they know the financials of households?
They know the financials but not necessarily their marital status.
The MSE Q&A mentions that this is different to Married Couples Allowance.0 -
I filled in the form to register and also claim last years but have heard nothing, this a couple of months back. Should I phone them?0

Anyone had their £212 cheque yet?
We applied about 6-8 weeks ago and my work have received and are now using my new 1210M tax code, but no sign of a cheque for last year yet
Thanks

We transferred recently and my wife has started a part time job.
My tax code has changed from 1100L to 1210M, which makes sense, an increase of £1100 for me.
Wife has just received her first few weeks payslips, and apart from the first which was an emergency? 0TW1, the following 4 are 996N, which seems odd, a reduction of only £1040 for her, i'd expect her code to have been 990N not 996N
Won't make any difference to her, as she's not gonna earn over £9k in this job, but just wonder how they came up with 996?
Thanks

Rebating tax taken by the no-personal-allowance PAYE code? Tax from previous year? How does her up-to-date P2 analyse the 996N?0 -
. . . but just wonder how they came up with 996? . . .
Sounds as though they might have anticipated a considerable taxable savings income. You may want to query it with HMRC.Warning: In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

Or maybe its something as simple as the extra £60 laundry allowance lots of MSE people claim.
Not sure why the Personal Savings Allowance has been mentioned asOP has not referred to wife having untaxed interest has he?0 -

You cannot have a reduction of £1040 for the Marriage Allowance, it is fixed at 10% of the Personal Allowance so this year would have to be £1100
A more likely explanation is that your wife has previously claimed laundry expenses of £60 and this is included in her tax code
11000 + 60 - 1100 = 9960 = code 996
PS. 0TW1 is not the emergency tax code, the emergency code this year is 1100L0
