Warning! Don’t use PayPal to pay on a credit card

PayPal is used for most eBay sales, and my PayPal account is funded from a credit card.
I bought an item on eBay for £150, which turned out to be not as pictured. It was a variant which would not be as good for my intended use.
I contacted the private seller, who promised to make a refund when I returned it. I suggested that as the wrong description had led me into the purchase they might offer to also pay me the postage cost for returning it.
No answer to that point, on two occasions. I discussed this with eBay, and they offered to pay the recorded delivery postage. They also said contact them again if the vendor didn't refund within a day of the item arriving back
I'm having trouble understanding the emphasis in the points the article is making, what chances I took that I didn't need to.0 -

This isn't for Ebay. I think it's been said a number of times - Ebay and Paypal processes mean that you actually get far better protection than just with section 75 off a credit card.
You can use Paypal to pay on other merchant websites aside from Ebay. Herein is where the section 75 protection is important, and is currently not being received.0 -
 BEWARE!
Paypal do NOT always help you with your financial issues anyway - despite their grand promises, assurances and "customer protection safeguards"!
A couple of years ago I was the sad victim of counterfeit goods for which I had paid using Paypal, firstly as it was convenient for both of us but mainly as I assumed it would afford me some degree of protection
WRONG!!
Upon discovering that the items were counterfeit I attempted to sort things out with the seller who naturally lied to me and strung me along so I contacted Paypal who were NOT in any way sympathetic and told me they could not assist until I had tried to resolve things with the seller and a certain (MORE) time had passed. Upon waiting this lengthy time I opened a case to which they said they would "investigate"
After waiting yet MORE time and sending SEVERAL emails to Paypal who did not respond, eventually the conclusion was pronounced that:
"We feel there is nothing we are able to do for you in this case and suggest you refer this matter to the Citizens Advice Bureau and the Small Claims Court!"
Paypal Protection Indeed! I lost ALL my money!
HAH! :mad:0 -
On ebay and most web sites I use Paypal which is linked to my bank account with a credit card backup. There is buyer protection. There is also Paypal Credit. I've had it for 9 months with a limit of £900 but I haven't yet found any retailer which accepts it including ebay sellers. So never spent on it so far. Perhaps not a lot of people know about it.0

Interesting. I have a Barclaycard/AmEx Cashback Credit Card.
I wonder if Barclaycard would help me with a section 75 claim?0 -

Martins claims that Pay Pal may not give full section 75 rights but when I complained to Pay Pal about a transaction the seller's feet never touched the ground, Pay Pal had it sorted before I'd even got a letter of response from the credit card company0

As someone who both buys and sells on eBay I can assure you all categorically that Paypal protection is just as good as, if not better than, section 75. There may not be a direct legal relationship but as a seller I can attest that in any dispute Paypal ALWAYS lives up to its claim of 100% buyer protection. I have invoked it as a buyer and suffered from it as a seller, since even when I am clearly being scammed by a buyer (the parcel arrived empty, the item was smelly, you name it) Paypal always always gives the buyer the benefit of the doubt and takes the money directly from the seller's account and refunds the buyer. MSE is over-dramatising the problem here.0

Oh dear. Lots of new users posting in BIG LETTERS and RED TEXT and different fonts is not going to get me to take something seriously.0

To digress slightly here's an example of how CC companies try to wriggle out of section 75 by preying on ignorance of public.
I bought a used iPhone advertised as unlocked. When it arrived it was locked to a phone company. I contacted the supplier who refused a refund then stopped responding. I then contacted B/C asking for a refund as I had rejected the item within the distance selling cooling off period. They replied demanding a sworn statement from a phone expert that it was locked to a network before proceeding. I pointed out the irrelevance of that as I had rejected the goods.
They then paid up.0
