Name on birth certificate different from passport

My Mum will be 70 this year and is worried that her forenames on her birth certificate are different from all other official documentation. Her mother registered her birth in England and then decided to call her a totally different name. She has her driver's licence, marriage licence and passport in the name she has always used but is worried that if when she dies, it will leave a real mess as the names do not match up. Her birth name is only on her birth certificate.

She can change by Deed poll but we are unsure when to date it for, does she date it for today as official proof of her change of name or should it be dated back to when she got married in 1966 as that would have been the first official time her name was used.

The passport is sufficient proof in itself. When it comes to changing names with out a deed poll the passport office is the most difficult to crack, so stop worrying. As and when she dies you will register it in the name she uses not her birth name.

Nothing to worry about - the registrar will ask if she has ever been known by any other name, you give the details and the death registration will be done with both names shown .... so under her name it it will read "XXX otherwise yyy".

This links the birth and death for historical purposes, but also avoids any issues if there are any official documents ( bank accounts, insurance policies, pensions, etc.) in her original birth name.
