I often do the opposite! I love dresses and very rarely wear trousers but this can lead to looking a bit overdressed if paired with heels so I put on my trusty vans. I also wear trainers on nights out because where's the fun in looking nice if you can't dance :rotfl:

There is a huge middle ground between heels and vans! :D But would you wear your vans with a suit to a job interview when presumably you're presenting your 'best self', or to work (in a traditional smart environment)?

Totally agree about comfy shoes for dancing. I'm a flats girl all day every day. :T

Yes, I do notice people's shoes. I'm constantly amazed at the number of what appear to be well-dressed and well-groomed people who appear to never polish or repair their shoes. If I was an employer in interview they would definitely get a black mark for them. Details matter. A lot. I'd be wondering what other small, "irrelevant" details they'd overlook day-to-day in their work.

No I'd never wear them for job interviews/ formal situations. They're just for day to day wear!

One of my friends always laughs at me because she says I can't wear such a nice dress with trainers but she's happy to go out in just leggings and a top which personally I'd never leave the house in. Personal taste ey :rotfl:

I don't notice what people have on their feet, I must admit.

I do wonder what those who do would make of me though, as I don't wear shoes at all unless I absolutely have to.

Any form of footwear hurts me like blazes; and really and truly it's not necessary a lot of the time when you're in a wheelchair.

DH is ex Army and obsessed with shoes being clean, so our kids shoes always looked immaculate. A couple of years ago one of our little ones brought a friend home for tea, and DH whispered to me about the state of her shoes, that they'd clearly never been polished since new. A few minutes later, I caught DH heading off to the garage shoes-in-hand ready to match up from our large stash of polish (think we have every colour ever made!). I stopped him and explained that it's not socially acceptable to clean someone elses kiddies shoes but he wasn't happy and the friend was always referred to a "xxx with the scruffy shoes":rotfl:

I don't notice shoes that much, though.

I'm single and if I think a man looks nice, I tend to look at his shoes immediately.

Trainers are a turn off, I don't like loafers, and shoes which taper to a point at the front are a definite no-no.

A nice pair of brogues, that's what I'm after! Preferably clean and polished although a little countryside mud is quite acceptable.

Can't say I have ever noticed women's shoes, except to be impressed by some of the heel heights! It does occur to me though that the lady in the supermarket in the OP's example might just have popped into the shop wearing her driving shoes.

My dad did national service, I wouldn't say he had a love of shiny shoes it was a necessary evil. I clearly remember every Sunday "dubbin" the school shoes for me and my brother. I just have to smell a tin of polish and I'm transported back to late 70s early 80s.
I do look at peoples shoes ,more to see if they complete the bigger picture, if they can't be bothered to check their shoes what else can they not be bothered to do.

I couldn't give two hoots about peoples shoes. We're a house full of tall ship sailors- barefoot whenever it's feasible.

Husband goes out to the garage every Sunday night to polish his shoes. Always brogues or half brogues. Comes in handy if we see some in a sale somewhere, we can buy a new pair even if he won't be using them for a couple of years. And he polishes my boots too in the winter. Although I work from home so my main footwear of choice is the slipper.

I've interviewed younger female students for placements in my workplace and I have really struggled not to notice their shoes. Somehow the distinction between clubwear and interview wear has diminished and I have seen girls wobble in on 6 inch heels with zebra patterns or worse. I'm pretty sure that they really think this is appropriate dress for an interview. Frankly they'd be better off in trainers. I say this with sympathy though, I think it really is tricky for women and it's not just about shoes being clean but also being appropriate to the occasion. Men are lucky to have a lot less choice!
