Are you saying that he can grab back the money via paypal and my certificate of posting isn't good enough? I thought I just had to provide proof of posting, didn't realise Paypal needed proof of delivery. So this is a scam because the buyer effectively gets the item for free by saying it never arrived. Nice .

This is what Paypal is all about it allows you to purchase lots of goods from people who only post via ordinary mail and then you can claim it never arrived.

It seems a bit odd that the buyer should start a dispute when the item was only posted on the 4th, have you informed them of this fact?
Also you say 1st class parcel - there is no such thing, it's either 1st class packet or standard parcels, if it's the latter, they normally takes 3 days anyway, so with the strike - who knows how long.
As an aside - for anything over 1 kg - dhl via payperdrop is the cheaper option, you can fully track it online and as you can enter the tracking details into paypal and they email the buyer, it's unlikely that the buyer would try a scam. For anything over 2kg, it's far cheaper.

Given any potential knock on from the postal strike (I know it's been over for a week now, but you never know) ask the buyer to double check at the PO their parcel isn't there as possibly no card was left.
It's BOUGHT (to Buy), not BROUGHT (to bring) AND you cannot be frauded, only DEfrauded.

Please do not buy animals from a pet store. Visit your local sanctuary or centre and give a good home to an unloved or abandoned animal.
  • That's why this whole thing seems so odd. Other people on ebay have communicated with ebay messages so if the buyer wondera where something's got to then they've just sent the seller a message. This buyer has just gone straight to dispute resolution in paypal, no comms at all. And did so on 7th August so didn't even wait 5 working days which is why I thought he must be dodgy or scamming somehow.

It was sent first class packet not parcel. Just demonstrating not being a detail person ;) I guess it's quite likely to arrive next week - fingers crossed. In the meantime I might send him an ebay message to confirm it has been posted.

I'm surprised that they could even start a dispute that early - as you have 7 days to post under paypal regardless.
One thing - why did you not contact the buyer as soon as you knew of the dispute? If they have been treated badly by a seller in the past, they may be just as wary of you and you would perhaps be able to placate them by a little communication.

Hi Soolin, Thanks for your response, I feel much happier now. I haven't had any messages via ebay but will just proceed with the Paypal dispute as you suggest. The item was less than £34 so I can claim via Royal Mail anyway. Sounds like the buyer has just jumped to the end of the process? Odd though.

Thanks for the AOL comment, didn't realise that might have been a factor here now you mention it.

Have you tried contacting they buyer - you can get their side o fit and explain that you didn't receive a first notification from PayPal, and you'll do X, Y and Z...?

isn't it obvious they meant to say it was a parcel sent first class?

easy on windswept, not everyone is spot on with PO terminology!!

anyway... you cannot open a paypal dispute before 10 days have lapsed, so the only thing this could be is a credit card chargeback.. in which case your buyer smells like a scammer to me. just MHO

Is this definitely an Item not received dispute? From the OP

We recently notified you of a complaint we received from a buyer regarding merchandise that either was never received or did not match the original description.

Could it be a SNAD instead? Buyers seem to be more likely to go straight to paypal with SNAD than with non-delivery
  • good thinking, depends on what information paypal have requested, definitely cant be a not received dispute as you cant open that before 10 days!

You can start a chargeback via paypal after 7 full days have elapsed..so buyer paid on the 1st and could start the chargeback on the 8th. The fact that seller did not post until the 4th is immaterial, the time for chargebacks starts on payment, not postage date.
