If I'd actually been awake when you posted that " original " comment i.e. 1.11a.m. I can safely say that would have sent me to the land of nod.
It's a boring and hoary old analogy. While some folk will certainly buy Macs as a " must have " accessory, most don't.
As I said in my earlier post I was no fan of Macs and had always used Windows machines - mainly Dell. When my better half changed to an iMac ( for her PhD work ) she was completely won over. She also has the MB Pro 13" as a portable version for when she attends Uni, seminars etc. They are working tools for her and as such she much prefers them to Windows versions.
It depends what you want it for...if it's for web browsing and playing around etc then any decent Windows machine will do that. If you buy a 13/15" MC Pro Retina purely to surf the web, then you've got a very nice looking machine but it's like having a Ferrari to do the shopping.... lif i had known then what i know now0 -
Interesting. My sister-in-law bought an iMac to help with her PhD work and then dumped it for a Dell.
Horses for courses. If you are an engineering student, Macs are a PITA because of the lack of software compatibility. That doesn't stop engineering students buying them though.0 -

Believe that if you wish. However most mac users I know have them because they look good and use them for no more than internet browsing.0 -
Why is it that every time a Mac/Apple product is so much as mentioned the same people seem to crawl out of the woodwork to slate Apple products or Apple users?
It's personal preference. The boring age old argument of "but a Windows machine with the same specs would be x cheaper" is irrelevant since you can not run OS X on a Windows machine (yes Hackintosh is possible but is far from flawless).
I've worked in IT for several years, I use both Windows and Mac, yet for most things I prefer the Mac over Windows - I just prefer OS X to Windows.0 -

And yet here you are on the pro Apple side! There's always an argument over which is better!
For the OP, if it's photo editing, a Mac or a PC would suit, if it's video editing on the hand it all comes down to what software the uni runs (Avid for PC or Final Cut for Mac) to what type of computer to get. I've ran Photoshop on a PC and a Mac. I've found it easier to use on Windows because I'm used to it personally.
I personally would ask 'what would I use it for' 'are there any pieces of software that can only run on Mac/Windows' that I need?' and 'is it worth the extra cost of a Mac for what I get'.
I don't mind Windows or Macs, but my home computer is Windows because Mac's are way too expensive for me. I bought a laptop for £500 this year, reduced from £700 or so, so I'm hoping this lasts me 4-5 years minimum, I just need to look after it!0 -

Awww no need to be like that. I'm just putting a counter opinion to all the apples are fantastic brigade.0 -
Remember that high gloss screens, fashion victim's Favourite and laptop salesman's delight, are near impossible to use with your back to a window or big light source.
There are only a couple of brands left that offer matte screens. Apple is not among them.0 -
Hi everyone, sorry for the long delay in replying, summer hols and a house moved have pushed this into 3rd place (until yesterday). Heres the spec of the laptop that we 'apparently' need to get him:
Macbook Pro15'4 inch
Intel quad core i7 2.5Ghz
16Gb RAM
512Gb flash hard drive
and either:
Nvidia GeForce Gt 750M
or
Intel Iris pro graphics & AMD R9 M370X, 2GB GDDR5.
Is there a suitable alternative, if this high level of spec is actually required?
Thanks again everyone, going to sit my partner down this evening and get her to read this post, bless her shes the worlds biggest technophobe.0 -

For a Journalism course ? Not a chance that this is needed. The lowest level of macbook would be more than capable of running any software he is likely to be using. In fact any half decent windows laptop would do the same.0
