Sorry if this is a bit long winded but I would be grateful for any help or advice. Please don't post just to give judgement - I know my son has been stupid
My son has bought a second hand car from a dealer. It has no V5C as the previous owner is in the process of removing the personalised number plate.
The personalised number plate appears on DVLA website with new MOT put on by the dealer and tax in previous owners name (runs out today).
The dealer told my son he was covered by previous owners tax. My son now knows this is incorrect.
My son cannot buy tax as he doesn't have the V5C/2
My son has bought insurance under the current personalised number plate - but my question is -
Is he insured as he is not yet the registered owner/keeper ?

In this instance, phone DVLA to confirm the car's details and if an application to transfer the plate has been received.
Do not drive the car until this is resolved.Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?0 -
Thanks Skivenov - what do we do once we have that info ? The DVLA website is showing the current number plate as the personalised one.
Edit : The dealer seems to be washing his hands of everything - just says that's life - he said the documents should arrive with him (the dealer) by Tuesday - but am not sure if he's just fobbing my son off
What do we do about insurance in the meantime - do we tell insurance company and can we suspend the insurance till this is sorted out ? He was building up his first years no claims bonus on his previous car - Will he lose this now ?

Why would you want to suspend the insurance? Surely you want it to be insured?0 -
His insurance policy states he must be the registered owner/keeper - was thinking that will make it an invalid policy ?0% credit card £1360 & 0% Car Loan £7500 ~ paid in full JAN 2020 = NOW DEBT FREE 🤗

I would say for all intents and purposes that he is (or will be) the registered keeper.
Presumably when he gets the paperwork, he will date the change as when he acquired the car.0 -
Hi rs65 thanks for your reply.
My son hopes to get the V5C/2 slip on Tuesday as the dealer has indicated it should be with him by then.
He intends to put 30/5/15 on the slip - the date he bought it. Is this correct ?
I think my son may get a fine as he hasn't been able to do a SORN as he is not the registered keeper and he cannot backdate tax.
If he doesn't get the V5C/2 on Tuesday he is going to phone DVLA to see if they have received an application for the number plate to be changed and I think probably he will need to send in V62 & V890
EDIT : When you say will he change the date when he acquired the car - can you explain please ?

I said 'date the change' not 'change the date'.0 -
sorry - typo / Misread your post haven't had much sleep with the worry of it all.
He will declare the change of ownership as 30/5/15 to DVLA - I understand he has 14 days to do this and declare SORN and he has to apply by post0% credit card £1360 & 0% Car Loan £7500 ~ paid in full JAN 2020 = NOW DEBT FREE 🤗

Not really sure why you are worrying.
He has insured it and will need to change the reg number when the paperwork comes through.
Tax is going to be a bit messy due to the change of reg and the new rules.
MOT will be fine - just check new reg shows as MOT'd when new reg known.
Chill out.0
