The more I travel the less I find that I take with me. Travelling light is very liberating.

Immodium (or supermarket own brand) - I always get a sicky stomach when I'm travelling due to nerves. Forgot when I went Amsterdam, so the first thing I bought out there was Immodium, a memorable first purchase. Never travel without it now.

Powerbank or similar phone charger that you charge first and then you can charge your phone when you're out and about. Only about the size of a lipstick but really worth it for long days. But apart from my kindle, phone, glasses and contact lenses, there's nothing I find essential. You can buy an adaptor anywhere for about £3. I do usually take a tube of travel wash so I can just rinse out t-shirts and knickers and don't have to take more than hand luggage
  • Couple of credit cards, smart phone, Kindle, basic first aid / medical stuff (plasters, paracetamol, antihistamines, Imodium), pen and paper, socket adaptor ... to be honest that's about it. My biggest worry when travelling is generally having enough to read, so the Kindle is a lifesaver for that.

I'm not that keen on adapters so I have bought power leads for laptops that have the correct foreign plug on them. Same with phone chargers and I always take a car cigarette lighter USB power adapter.

No offence intended as you can obviously spend your money however you want, but that's beyond ridiculous!

There's no logical reason whatsoever to buy a new laptop lead. It doesn't increase risks of surges or whatever else you think is going to happen.

agreed, I was even more incredulous at this than I was at post #1 ;-)

BTW the regulation plastic bag used for toiletries through security makes a good bathplug.

Well number 3 is a good tip - battery packs have become very popular but many people still don't know about them.

Number 1 is confusing (surely everyone knows other countries generally have different plug sockets?). Carrying a bath plug also seems very unnecessary. Are the standard of hotels that can't even provide a plug the type of place you really want to take a bath in anyway?

They're just trying to be helpful though, so be nice!

What about a big bag of condoms? The ones they sell in foreign countries are usually too small.

failing that a crisp packet & an elastic band :rotfl:

Did the hotel reception not have a bath plug? I've stayed in a few places with no plug, and reception handed them over when asked.

    No, they did not!

    - A door wedge.
    - A basis first-aid kit.
    - Spare pair of glasses.
    - Ear plugs.
    - The sink-plug comes in useful to deny mozzies a point of entry. Keep it plugged in 24/7.
    - A pretty postcard of the town you live in. Use it as a Thank You card for the room maid.
