I was also going to suggest Chester.
Also the OP hasn't mentioned Manchester - plenty to do there on a short break, with the Lowry, War Museum, Museum of Science & Industry etc (although the latter in particular may not be kid-free in the school holidays)0 -
Bath. Lots to do.0

Edinburgh or Glasgow?A good life is when you assume nothing, do more, need less, smile often, dream big, laugh a lot, and realise how blessed you are.

North Wales . Land of Castles here . Mid july enters into the kids holidays when prices go up and kids come out . Caernarfon , Conwy & Llandudno to name a few
I concur. We are currently in Snowdonia for a week. If you like castles then North Wales is amazing, 4 of them are a World Heritage site. Nice if you like cute trains as well;)0 -
There's also The Great Orme at Llandudno and the dry toboggan ride. Although last time we visited it was very windy and they stopped the cable car up to the top.
I'd second Cardiff too - in the Cardiff Bay area the Millennium Centre has a really interesting tour and Pierhead is a fantastic building. There's also the Dr Who experience if that's your thing although I've not done it myself. Cardiff Castle is stunning - quite small if I remember rightly but amazing wall murals in many rooms.0 -
If you like castles you can stay in university rooms at the Castle in Durham
