Lost £200 on credit card

On Friday, I bought a set of Tuesday theatre tickets for £200 using my credit card.

Unfortunately, there was an error during the booking (the website was a bit slow) which meant that the date was reset to the next available show (Saturday).

This meant that we had been booked for Saturday without realising it. So when we went to the box office to collect the tickets on Tuesday, they weren't there!

[NB: I admit that I should have read the confirmation email, which did state that tickets had been booked for Saturday. I normally do, I missed it on this occasion - hands up].

Is there anything that can be done to get some of the money back?

I've tried phoning Last minute - they said that the tickets were non refundable and that it would have said Saturday on the website (I disagree - we definitely booked for Tuesday)
The bank said a dispute would fail as it was a 3rd party booking agent.

This is a genuine mistake and I feel bitter at having lost £200.

We only have your word for this error.

No there is no way to get your money back. Why should the theatre be out of pocket for potentially your error?
  • Hi Simon,

Just to clarify - this was an error with the website.

Yes, but as Simon was explaining, we only have your word for that. We are not calling you a liar, by any means, but unless you can PROVE otherwise, I don't think you'll have much luck getting any form of refund. And last minute have already said that the disagree with your claim that the website was faulty.

Can you not go on the Saturday or sell the tickets on?

  • Oh dear, this is unfortunate.
  • Yes - the issue is that the website defaulted to the next available performance when it crashed.

Tricky, and I'm not absolutely clear as to what happened. This business of it defaulting to another date and then issuing the tickets without further confirmation from you seems very odd.. is that really what happened? Did you collect the Saturday tickets?

Assuming you didn't and I got the story right, I would dispute the transaction. You bought tickets for Tuesday. You were charged for tickets for Tuesday. You didn't get tickets for Tuesday. Keep it simple.

As for "proof", it's for the CC to prove you authorised the transaction, not for you to prove you didn't. The fact you didn't collect the Saturday tickets which they claim you purchased adds some credibility to your story. Of course it is not as simple as saying it was unauthorised - the dispute is really as to what was purchased rather than whether there was authorisation.

It is a real pity you didn't check the confirmation. But I don't think this defeats your claim. That was post-the event.

    Worth a try.

All very well disputing it but all the systems, including confirmation show the tickets weren't booked for Tuesday but instead for Saturday.

Simply put they don't believe you and unless you can prove otherwise a chargeback or S75 claim will fail.

If you have selected a date that is not available and the booking system had offered you the next available date instead that is not an error. It is giving you the first available seats.
