Our last house - a non-listed Georgian ashlar stone, thatched vilłage house - had original timber sash windows in an appalling state of repair when we purchased the house as a major project in 2011.

We attempted to restore them but they were beyond repair so we took the step of having new windows installed.

As the house fronted onto a busy road we decided to install d/g windows, but despite the non-listed status we chose timber replacement sashes which we had painted a suitable period-appropriate colour (not white!).....

Every other period house in the village that had replaced their windows had opted for white UPVC - the only listed buildings were the pub and shop btw - which IMHO looked totally out of character on 200+ year old stone/thatched buildings.

I concede that cost is often an issue when getting these works done, but why oh why do people buy period houses if they want to ruin them with ugly plastic windows?

    Sorry, rant over :o:p

It has three other windows and a Velux, all at the back, which have already been done.
At which point, you might like to pause and think "So why weren't the windows at the front replaced at the same time...?"

Have you looked to see if there's any history of planning applications on the property?

Worth checking, I know cases where listing has been granted on estates "as is" in other words, the listing was for ali, PVC or wood as existed on that day, in future permission was then needed and matching ali/PVC or wood was the only accepted window....bonkers,, reverting back to the original design has to be accepted?

also depends when the property was listed or work done. If windows changed post the listing, big problems, if it was listed then new windows should be as listing
Buying quality goods which last, should be an investment that saves money. :T
Buying cheap products which fail, wastes money and costs twice as much in the long run.
