Selling private number plate

I want to sell our private number plate which is still on the vehicle. There seems to be loads of companies online which will sell the plate for you and the new owner pays the transfer fee, has anyone had any success doing this as it's not something I've ever done before. It has been valued at £1100 by one such company but to be fair I think that's over what its worth.

Loads of companies will offer it for sale and advertise it. It will only sell if someone wants it. Choose a company who's price you agree with and offer it through them. Then wait and see.

They can pick any number that may entice you to use them to sell it, But if nobody wants the plate or only think its worth £50 then it wont sell.

How long are you willing to wait to sell it?

I want to sell it fairly quickly. It's on the car at the moment and we are wanting to sell the car. Could put it on our other car but don't really want to, it would cost £80 to transfer it anyway.

That still would leave you with a fictitional £1020, the websites don't buy the plates from you, they simply wait for some mug to want the plate and take a comission, what's the price of a similar plate on the DVLA?

Pay for the plate to be put on a retention certificate and wait for it to sell. Could take weeks or months and you may not get the £1100 that one company valued it at.

    Good lucks!

you need to put it on retention and then think about selling it

the figure quoted by the selling agent is probably four times what the plate is actually worth

if it is a truly desirable plate then it may be worth a few quid but even then it is only worth what somebody will give you for it, if it is just a random mix of letters and numbers that means something to you then you may struggle to sell it on

Sounds like putting it on retention is the best way to go about it, I can't see the car being worth any more with it on and the numberplate has no relevance to the car model.

    Thanks for the replies.
  • Car number plate dealers can be like estate agents. They tell you it's worth £y just to get your business even though you (and they) know it's only worth £x.

Any company that works in that way is not worth doing business with.

Have a look on eBay and see what similar number plates are selling for.

It used to be the case that you could pay the £80 to have the plate taken off the car and put on retention, and you retained the right to the number for as long as you liked. But now I believe there is a time limit on this, and you have to keep paying every 3 years or so to have the 'retention' renewed. So now, I would only put my plate on retention if I was definitely selling the car (or the plate), without much delay. Putting it on retention and then getting a website to advertise it (where finding a buyer could take a long time) could turn out quite expensive.

Things have moved on a bit regards retaining a registration and the situation is a little different but much easier.

    I posted this only yesterday:

    It's now incredibly easy on-line.

    Take off - https://www.gov.uk/keep-registration-number

You pay £80 and it's valid for 10 years - once the online application is successful, you can use the retention certificate which will be issued by post to assign the personalised registration to a new vehicle.

Again it can be done on-line.

    Put on - https://www.personalisedvehicleregis...vehicle-lookup
