I store mine in an old sock and then hang it from a nail.

I got a ceramic bowl in a tapas gift set a few years ago, it's about as deep as an egg, and holds about a dozen in a single layer, but a few more can easily nestle in the gaps without fear of rolling off. It usually sits on my windowsill.

I know there's the debate over fridge/cupboard/counter top egg storage but I was trying to pin it down to actual storage container. I am moving from fridge door storing to counter top.

I am being a bit nosey but hopefully trying to tap into a good idea that will prevent me having to buy a special holder or if I do have to make a purchase then you might be able to help me achieve it cheaply.

I have about a dozen at any time really. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Never in a solitary wicker container.

This sounds so lovely that I feel a little sad for my eggs in their box in the cupboard!

I can't recall where I learned that eggs should be stored point down to keep the yolks more central and protected, but I've always done that.
Mostly I get them from a supermarket and they are usually packed that way, but I will flip any rebellious pointer-uppers when I get home.

Has anyone ever noticed much of a difference? Can I stop being hung up on egg direction?

  • It's because there is an air gap at the rounded end and keeping them pointy side down is supposed to keep them fresher, I've never quite understood the mechanism though!

I have chickens and just keep the eggs on the counter in a 30 egg cardboard tray I got from the Chinese takeaway. I get given egg boxes all the time to put eggs in for friends and family. I haven't spent a single penny on egg storage as yet :)

I keep mine in a big porcelain chicken container. Very pretty and cheerful looking. The eggs seem to stay fresh in there and as they're in a container they don't absorb any odours.

You should never keep eggs in the fridge as they will absorb food odours, and when they're too cold will crack when boiling. Though cold eggs are good for poaching.
