Based on what the government website says Universal credit will not catch anyone out. The main change will be from having different benefits paid at different times to receiving one lump sum including rent of which you have to dole out to everyone. My local council has increased its taskforce in pre warning tenants universal credit will place them in rent arrears as all monies will be paid a month in arrears unlike current system

    Hi there,

I am long term unemployed due to mental health issues and am 57 years of age. I go for medicals every so often and get put into something called (is it a work related activity group?). Initially I used to go and see someone every month or so at the JC but after a reasonably short while they realised that I was not up to the task and have not been for what seems like years.

Anyway I have just a received post work programme appointment letter. After having read the horror stories of what this might entail for me on the internet (I just will not be able to attend) and the fact that my benefits will no doubt be sanctioned a friend has come up with an idea.

He works in a business where he employs people who work from home. I believe with his initial support I could do this work.

I am on full housing benefit of £850 per month and I live in Lewisham.

My question is: If he did employ me would I be able to completely detach my self from the JC (what they are going to want me to do utterly scares me) and if so how much would I be able to earn from him before that effected my housing benefit ?

Also, what other payments would I be liable for ?

    Ty in advance

Best thing to do maybe go to the Turn2Us website - you can input your income and find out a rough idea.

Ah,but as it's all lumped in together you are under the DWP. If you aren't earning enough (decided by the hours they determine a person in your circumstances) you aren't meeting your conditionality and will have to look for further hours or a new or additional job and attend the job centre and look for more work ;) . The aim is to push people to self sufficiency. And yes, they can sanction too.

So,yes, it will be different. Especially for people working part time.

Ermm, the aim is to get the unemployment figures down as much as possible and who gives a monkeys about the human cost as they are all lazy and !!!!less anyway.

People with health issues either physical or mental are very very scared for a very good reason, I am one.

Some of the above attitudes to health issues just illustrate the prevailing culture in this country.

Forget conspiracy theories, have a really good read about cultures/countries where there is a very large disparity between the very rich and the very poor, like UK and USA. And then have a read about countries/cultures where there is a very small gap, Germany springs to mind here.

Cruel, callus, and unless you are a truly wealthy person, in the long run stupid as well ;)

Post Work Programme Support appointments are routine and nothing to worry about. You may be asked to attend weekly or fortnightly and the times of appointments will change; but, other than being asked to provide job search evidence and to sign upto Universal Jobmatch, it shouldn't be too difficult.

Some people are sent on eg 5 day courses but there just isn't the capacity or funding for full-time courses or daily job signings for any but 2% of JSA claimants [probably the horror stories you've read about].

You'd potentially become liable for Council Tax after 4 weeks of signing off JSA; but, of course, you could claim Council Tax Support, if you continue to claim Housing Benefit/LHA when you work part-time.
Please be polite to OPs and remember this is a site for Claimants and Appellants to seek redress against their bank, ex-boss or retailer. If they wanted morality or the view of the IoD or Bank they'd ask them.

So you can work if you really wanted to then OP? Why not try full time with your friend.
