I just want a comfortable car

SAAB or a Volvo0

Some of the cars mentioned are thin on the ground. I have other requirements - must be petrol not diesel and mileage less than 35000. Short list now Kia Cee'd, Mercedes-Benz C Class, Jaguar XF and Skoda Octavia.0

If you want a very comfortable, petrol, automatic car I would have thought the Lexus IS250 meets the mark? They're quite reliable too.
I stand to be corrected.0 -
Skoda Octavia is a great car but not that comfy.0

I'd recommend dropping a Honda Accord in this list. bigger than your C-Class and Kia cee'd.0 -
Ford Focus? For that money you could get an almost new one.0

Hyundai XG30 does all of the above and you could buy 12 for that budget. If you could find 12 in existence.0

The jag suggested above is a good shout. I like leftfield choices, so my vote is a citroen c6, with plenty of change left over to give to your mechanic. £12k might just get you in to 2008 Lexus LS 600h territory. Mmmm. Don't worry if its done 135000 miles, its like 35000 in a jag or beemer.0

You won't get an XF for £12k with a petrol engine and under 35k miles, not from autotrader anyway.
This one comes close though.

£16-17k looks a better price point.0 -
Mercedes C Class is quite comfortable, but you have to be careful which variant as some have fairly stiff suspension. Also, some of the earlier C classes had a problem with the diesel design, and you may find petrol versions quite hard to find. However, the auto gearbox is a gem - Merc don't really design for manual and so it is very easy to get Merc autos with lots of choice.
I'm prone to back problems and having said that the ride in the Merc is a bit stiff, the seats in my AMG Sport |blueEfficiency (not an AMG, just the styling kit on the run out models) are excellent and I get no issues on very long journeys.0
