Cancelling sky but keeping satellite signal after building work

On reviewing my Sky package I think I might cancel as I am not really using the paid for channels enough to justify keeping it. Now would be a good time to cancel as I am going away for 2 months over the summer.

However, whilst I am away the block of flats that I live in is due to have new external cladding fitted to save money on our heating bills. The company fitting the cladding have noted that I have Sky and have told me that they will test the signal before they move it on to the scaffolding and then when they replace it on the finished wall.

My question is: can they tell from the signal whether I have a valid Sky subscription? I am pretty sure they can't, but I don't really want them to leave me with no signal because they think I am no longer using Sky. I don't have a TV aerial you see just a dish, and believe I can just continue to use a Sky box and a dish to get free to air channels.

Any one on here know about such things?

Thanks

Their test will either be to ask you if you can see a picture on your TV while they wiggle the dish, or they'll use a test meter while they wiggle the dish. In both cases they'll be checking the signal level from the dish and will have no knowledge of whether you are using Sky, Freesat-from-Sky, or Freesat.

I would suggest you get a cheap freesat box set up before you go away, and have a neighbour check it's working for you, as getting them back to fix it two months later may be rather more problematic.

Assuming it's your own dish, ask them if they can bring in all 4 outputs from the dish into your flat, this will allow you to use Freesat+ in the lounge and have 2 further feeds to bedrooms.

Thanks for that! :-) I'm not a fan of tv in bedrooms but I would eventually want a recordable freesat box. I have sky plus at the mo so presume that I have enough leads coming in to use freesat+ too??

Sky+ requires two cables and Freesat+ requires two cables. So if, as you suggest, you want to use "freesat+ too" you'll need four cables.

Ta, but by the 'too' I meant does Freesat+ work on the same principle as sky+ cables wise. ;-) i.e. I need two cables for either solution. I don't intend to use both! :-)

So yep, i have the two cables cor my sky+ so swapping to freesat+ shouldn't be an issue from what you say.

You use the same two feeds for either platform-the output is determined by the box you connect to. The dish alignment, cabling and LNB is the same for both-all you need to do to get Freesat is swap the box. Or, if you don't want PVR facilities or access to pre-recorded programmes, use the existing Sky+ box without a sub to get Freesat from Sky.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Cacel Sky and leave your sky box plugged in. After 2 months Sky will probably offer you 60% off plus £100 credit. So if you get the basic package it will only cost you £2 for the whole year and still have most of the Sky channels plus sky plus.
A lot cheaper than buying a free sat recorder box.
